Travel itinerary

Day 1 - Addis Ababa – Dinsho – Bale Mountains National Park

Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, drive southeast through the scenic Ethiopian highlands toward Bale Mountains National Park. En route, enjoy views of rural villages, agricultural landscapes, and traditional Oromo settlements. After arriving at Dinsho, the headquarters of the park, meet your local guide and park scout for a short orientation. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through the Dinsho and Gaysay grasslands, one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the park. Here, visitors have excellent opportunities to observe Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Warthogs, and numerous endemic bird species. The day concludes with dinner and an overnight stay in Dinsho or Goba.

Day 2 - Dinsho – Sanetti Plateau – Ethiopian Wolf Tracking

After breakfast, depart for the spectacular Sanetti Plateau, the largest Afro-alpine habitat in Africa. The drive ascends through dramatic mountain scenery and giant heather forests before reaching elevations above 4,000 meters. Explore the plateau's unique ecosystem, known for its endemic wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. Search for the endangered Ethiopian Wolf, often seen hunting giant mole-rats across the open moorlands. Continue to Tulu Dimtu, Ethiopia's second-highest peak at 4,377 meters above sea level, where panoramic views stretch across the Bale Mountains. Spend the afternoon exploring the plateau before returning to your lodge.

Overnight: Goba or Sanetti Area Lodge

Day 3 - Sanetti Plateau – Harenna Escarpment – Harenna Forest

This morning, travel across the southern edge of the Sanetti Plateau before descending the dramatic Harenna Escarpment. The route offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Ethiopia, with breathtaking viewpoints overlooking vast forests and valleys. Continue into the Harenna Forest, one of the largest remaining cloud forests in the country. The forest is famous for its wild coffee, dense bamboo stands, and unique wildlife. Enjoy a guided forest walk while searching for Bale Monkeys, Colobus Monkeys, and a variety of endemic birds. The cool and misty forest environment provides a striking contrast to the Afro-alpine landscapes visited the previous day.

Day 4 - Full-Day Exploration of Harenna Forest

Spend the day exploring the remarkable biodiversity of Harenna Forest. Follow forest trails beneath giant trees draped with moss and lichens while learning about the ecological importance of this unique ecosystem. Visit areas where wild Arabica coffee naturally grows and interact with local communities who depend on the forest for their livelihoods. The day provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and wildlife observation. Depending on sightings, visitors may encounter Bale Monkeys, Giant Forest Hogs, and several endemic bird species. The peaceful atmosphere of the forest makes this one of the most memorable experiences of the tour.

Overnight: Harenna Forest Lodge

Day 5 - Harenna Forest – Sof Omar Cave – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, depart for Sof Omar Cave, one of Africa’s largest and most impressive limestone cave systems. Accompanied by a local guide, explore the vast underground chambers carved by the Weyib River over millions of years. Discover fascinating rock formations, cathedral-like caverns, and the cultural significance of the cave to local communities. After the cave visit, begin the return journey to Addis Ababa. Arrive in the evening, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure through the diverse landscapes and wildlife habitats of Bale Mountains National Park.
