Day 1

Arrival in Addis Ababa

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, meet your Ethio Origins Tour representative and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a guided Addis Ababa city tour including the National Museum, home of Lucy, the Ethnological Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Merkato, and Mount Entoto for panoramic views of the capital city.

Day 2

Addis Ababa - Debre Markos

Drive north through the Ethiopian Highlands. Visit Debre Libanos Monastery, founded by Saint Tekle Haymanot in the 13th century, continue to the Portuguese Bridge, and enjoy views of the Jemma River Gorge before crossing the Blue Nile Gorge en route to Debre Markos.

Day 3

Debre Markos - Bahir Dar

Continue to Bahir Dar, one of Ethiopia's attractive lakeside cities. Upon arrival, enjoy a relaxing walk through the city and local markets. In the evening, head to Bezawit Hill for sunset views over Lake Tana and the Blue Nile.

Day 4

Lake Tana Monasteries

Take a full-day boat excursion on Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. Visit the monasteries of the Zege Peninsula, including Ura Kidane Mihret, renowned for murals and religious treasures. Observe local fishermen, birdlife, and perhaps hippos along the shoreline.

Day 5

Blue Nile Falls - Gondar

Visit the Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tis Issat, or Smoking Water. Walk through rural villages and cross the historic Portuguese Bridge. After lunch, drive to Gondar, the former capital of Ethiopia's emperors.

Day 6

Gondar - Simien Mountains

Visit Gondar's Royal Enclosure at Fasil Ghebbi, Fasilides Bath, and Debre Birhan Selassie Church with its angel-covered ceiling. In the afternoon, drive to Simien Mountains National Park and enjoy sunset views.

Day 7

Simien Mountains National Park

Spend the day exploring one of Africa's most spectacular mountain ranges. Enjoy hiking opportunities and look for endemic wildlife including Gelada Baboons, Walia Ibex, Ethiopian Klipspringers, and numerous bird species while admiring dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and highland landscapes.

Day 8

Simien Mountains - Axum

Drive through northern Ethiopia's dramatic scenery toward Axum. Travel via the Lima Limo Road and cross the Tekeze River Valley while enjoying mountain landscapes.

Discover Axum

Explore Ethiopia's ancient capital and one of Africa's major archaeological sites. Visit Stelae Park, the Tombs of Kings, Queen of Sheba's Palace ruins, Ezana's inscriptions, and St. Mary of Zion Church, associated with the legend of the Ark of the Covenant.

Day 10

Axum - Tigray

Travel through rugged Tigray landscapes. Visit Yeha Temple, Ethiopia's oldest standing structure, dating back nearly 3,000 years, then continue through mountain scenery toward the Gheralta region.

Day 11

Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches - Mekele

Explore some of Tigray's remarkable rock-hewn churches, dramatically carved into cliffs and mountainsides. Depending on interests and fitness level, choose from churches accessible by short or moderate hikes, then continue to Mekele.

Day 12

Mekele - Lalibela

Travel through the Ethiopian Highlands toward Lalibela. Enjoy mountain scenery, traditional villages, and rural landscapes. Optional visit to Yemrehane Kristos Church, one of Ethiopia's finest medieval churches.

Day 13

Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

Spend the day exploring the first group of Lalibela's famous rock-hewn churches. Marvel at the engineering and religious significance of these UNESCO World Heritage monuments carved directly into solid rock.

Lalibela Exploration

Continue visiting the remaining churches, including Bete Giyorgis, the Church of St. George. Optional activities include hiking to Asheton Maryam Monastery, attending local religious ceremonies, cultural experiences, or traditional coffee ceremonies.

Lalibela - Kombolcha

Drive south through scenic mountain landscapes and traditional villages. Observe daily life in rural Ethiopia while traveling toward Kombolcha.

Kombolcha - Awash National Park

Travel southeast through the Afar lowlands toward Awash National Park. Observe the landscape change as the highlands give way to semi-desert plains and savannah ecosystems.

Awash National Park Safari

Enjoy game drives and nature walks in Awash National Park. Look for Oryx, Soemmerring's Gazelle, Warthogs, Olive Baboons, Crocodiles, and bird species. Visit Awash Falls and natural hot springs.

Day 18

Awash - Harar

Drive east toward Harar, passing fertile agricultural regions known for coffee and khat production before arriving in one of Ethiopia's most fascinating cultural destinations.

Explore Harar

Discover the UNESCO-listed walled city of Harar. Wander through colorful markets, narrow alleyways, traditional Harari houses, museums, and historic mosques. In the evening, witness the Hyena Feeding Ceremony, one of Ethiopia's unique cultural traditions.

Day 20

Harar - Addis Ababa - Departure

Drive back to Addis Ababa through Ethiopia's eastern highlands. Upon arrival, enjoy last-minute shopping, relaxation, and a farewell cultural dinner with traditional Ethiopian cuisine, music, and dance performances. Later, transfer to Bole International Airport for your international departure flight.
